The SegHidro Project

SegHidro aims at building a system to support sustainable water resources management in the Northeastern Brazil. OurGrid has been used to provide a computational grid infrastructure to implement the set of applications needed to forecast the amount of water that will be available in the region, and plan how to use it. The people supporting SegHidro are building a grid portal to make these applications easily available to professionals and academics. Interdisciplinary governmental institutions and academic professionals are engaged in bringing SegHidro to reality.

SegHidro uses the grid to help users to simulate a cascade of meteorological and hydrological models. These models are used to help the government and researchers to make better sustainable development decisions. In this way, it will be possible, for example, to decide which kind of agricultural method will be appropriate for the region’s climate, and which amount of water will be available in the following year. This is crucial in a region of Brazil where frequent draughts and lack of planning have brought unnecessary suffering to a huge number of people. SegHidro project is funded by the Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology.

The GerpavGrid Project

The Gerpav application is used in Porto Alegre, the capital city of Rio Grande do Sul, located in Southern Brazil, with the purpose of maintaining and planning investments in the city road system. The GerpavGrid project aims at porting this application to run on a grid infrastructure. OurGrid was used to easily create this grid. Several optimization strategies were developed in the sequential application port to address performance bottlenecks, and facilitate the distribution of tasks within the grid. Grid technology has brought substantial performance gains to the distributed version of the Gerpav application, showing that a simple grid infrastructure can also be an attractive implementation platform for non-classical HPC applications that are database intensive. More details about this project can be found in the paper "GerpavGrid: using the Grid to maintain the city road system".

ShareGrid

“ShareGrid (formerly GridLab) is a collaborative project, coordinated by TOPIX in the framework of the Innovation Development Program and funded by Regione Piemonte, aimed at providing a computing and storage service to the academic research community. The service is built upon a distributed regional Grid computing infrastructure and it is targeted to academic laboratories that have computational needs that cannot be fulfilled by local resources. ShareGrid's testbed is based on the OurGrid middleware, that will be tailored to the specific needs of the ShareGrid project.” (From the ShareGrid web site at http://www.dcs.di.unipmn.it/sharegrid). More details about this project can be found in the paper "Peer-to-Peer Desktop Grids in the Real World: The ShareGrid Project".

The GridUnit Project

Software testing practices improve software reliability. This is a fact that a long history of disasters caused by poorly tested software will not allow us to forget. However, as software develops, its test suite becomes larger; as a result, its running time becomes a problem to software developers. This is especially significant in the case of some agile methodologies, which call for a short develop/test cycle. Moreover, due to the increasing complexity of systems, it is not enough to test software only in the development environment. We need to test it in a variety of environments. The GridUnit framework represents the first attempt at exploring the intrinsic characteristics of the Grid and speed up the software testing process. More information about the GridUnit framework can be found .
